Akeel Bilgrami is the Johnsonian Professor of Philosophy at Columbia University and the Director of Columbia's Heyman Center for the Humanities. He studied at Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar and before that at Elphinstone College, Bombay. He has a Ph.D from the University of Chicago. His books include "Belief and Meaning", "Self-Knowledge and Resentment" and the forthcoming "Politics and the Moral Psychology of Identity" with Harvard University Press. He is at present writing a book called "What is a Muslim?" which is on religion and secularism in the global context, with a special focus on Islam for Princeton University Press and a small book on Gandhi's thought and its relevance for today for Columbia University Press. He has a longer term project on 'Practical Reason', that is to say, the notion of rationality in Ethics and Politics.
