Global Thought announces that the spring 2009 event series investigating the financial crisis will continue in the fall 2009 semester with discussions, lectures and workshops covering the economic situation.
This past semester, Global Thought has hosted a series of events about the current financial crisis. Committee chair Joseph Stiglitz and guest lecturer Prabhat Patniak inaugurated this series on March 2nd with a lecture titled "How to Think about the Financial Crisis.". Two lunch-hour workshops followed in April. On April 20, Indian economist CP Chandrasekhar discussed the impact of the financial crisis in India with Global Thought post-doctoral fellow Arjun Jayadev and Assistant Professor of Economics at Barnard College Sanjay Reddy. On April 22, economic historian Liaquat Ahamed spoke about his recent book, The Lords of Finance: The Bankers who Broke the World , which discusses the parallelsbetween the economic collapse of the 1930s and the economic situation today. Several CGT committee members have been actively involved in the public debate on the financial crisis, particularly Joseph Stiglitz, who recently testified before the Joint Economic Committee of the U.S. Congress at a hearing entitled "Too Big to Fail or Too Big to Save? Examining the Systemic Threats of Large Financial Institutions". Similar events can be anticipated for the fall and will be announced on the Global Thought website.
