The Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship (IGERT) program seeks to train Ph.D. students with the interdisciplinary background and the technical, professional and personal skills needed to address the global questions of the future. Through the use of innovative curricula and internships, and by focusing on problem-centered training, these programs give their graduates the edge needed to become leaders in their chosen fields.
Funded by the National Science Foundation, IGERT works with various academic institutions to establish specific opportunities to improve their graduate experience. There are currently over 100 IGERT programs at universities across the United States.
Columbia's IGERT education program in International Development and Globalization (IDG) brings together students from Economics, Political Science, Sociology, Sustainable Development, Socio medical Sciences, Urban Planning and Communications to engage in interdisciplinary research. Funded by National Science Foundation, this program is based on the premise that international development and globalization jointly define one of the central opportunities and problems of our time. Serious efforts to maximize the benefits of globalization necessitate an interdisciplinary and international perspective. IDG gives students space to work on pressing and timely issues in interdisciplinary ways, and is designed to be inclusive of international research.
