The speakers will discuss the research findings and larger implications of the Global Cities Power Index project, produced by the Institute for Urban Strategies of The Mori Memorial Foundation (Tokyo). The report, released in October 2009, examines 35 global cities through 69 indicators covering Economy, Research & Development, Cultural Interaction, Livability, Ecology & Natural Environment, and Accessibility. One implication of the growth of intercity networks is the emergence of an urban geopolitics. Many of our major governance challenges become concrete and urgent in these cities. Urban leaderships -political, corporate, economic- are under more immediate pressure to act on these conditions than national governments.
