This small luncheon workshop will feature C.P. Chandrasekhar speaking on the financial crisis with a focus on its impact in India, followed by commentary from Sanjay Reddy and Arjun Jayadev.

C.P Chandrasekhar is a professor at the Centre for Economic Studies and Planning at Jawaharlal Nehru University. He sits on the executive committee of International Development Economics Associates, a network of economists which uses critical analyses of economic and development policy to create and strengthen alternatives to the neo-liberal paradigm. He is the co-author of Crisis as Conquest: Learning from East Asia with Jayati Ghosh and has authored numerous articles on the recession, international finance and Asia.

Arjun Jayadev is a post-doctoral scholar at the Committee on Global Thought and an assistant professor of economics at the University of Massachusetts, Boston. His research focuses on the ways in which policy shifts that have occurred globally over the last three decades have impacted distributional outcomes and the welfare of the poor. He is currently examining how financial reforms in India have changed the access to finance for various groups across several axes (urban versus rural, small landholders versus large landholders, caste groups). Jayadev also works with a lawyer's advocacy group in India in assessing the impacts of patent law in India on pharmaceutical provisions and access to medicines.

Sanjay Reddy is an assistant professor of economics at Barnard College. His areas of study include development economics, international economics, and economics and philosophy. He has worked extensively as a consultant for development agencies and international institutions, including the UN Research Institute for Social Development, and the World Bank. He has been a member of the "advisory panel of eminent experts" of the UNDP's Human Development Report, and is presently a member of the UN Statistics Division's Steering Committee on Poverty Statistics. He has published and presented widely, and is a member of the editorial advisory boards of Development, Ethics and International Affairs and the European Journal of Development Research.
