Using a framework of accountability borrowed from political discussions, Joseph Stiglitz looks at the failures of the IMF to advance its stated goals. He argues that the IMF's often counterproductive work is the result of a flawed system of governance within the institution. Stiglitz suggests that the World Bank, where governance was reformed to more successfully advance its agenda of poverty reduction, may provide a helpful guide for renovating the IMF.
